| Message: | Greetings and Salutations to all Alumni. MY STORY: born to Wilbert E. and Mary Alyce Burgie May 1957. Talaqua Unit Camp Minisink (Boys Director's residence) 1957-1961. I'm in the picture with Mayor Lindsay breaking ground for the "new" Minisink Townhouse (1962?). Participated as a Cadet in many Cadet Corps Review Shows at the 369th Armory. Traveled to countless competitions with the the Minisink (and later)NYCMS Warriors Drum and Bugle Corp (Agawam Mass, Garfield NJ,Gaelic Park NY etc.)and to quite a few Princeton University Alumni weekends too! Years of washing dishes and setting tables at Winter Camping (Green Acres, Dover Plains NY. Attended summer camp at Camp Sharparoon (1966-1970). Participated in Cadet Corps "Summer Academy" at P.S. 28 on 155th street. NYCMS Ski Team 1971-73. Taught Music at Summer Academy at Jerome Avenue "Headquarters" Unit. President of Pen and Scroll Third Cadre Line known as "New Testament"-1982. Camp Director of Camp Minisink on Sharparoon Lake-1990. My brother and best friend Gregory A. Griffin(Warrior, Cadet, Minisinker)passed away recently and that event prompted a group of brothers to get together and reflect on the Minisink/Cadet Corps/City Mission experience. From that gathering of brothers came an idea. . . We are now making preparations to produce a film documentary about the NYCMS Cadet Corps experience and the effect my father Wilbert E. Burgie had on so many people's lives. We are developing a list of people in the NYC area to be interviewed on camera about their personal experiences and how the Cadet Corps affected their lives. What we could use some help with is pictures, video or film of Cadet Corps activities. . . Drill Teams,Karate, Drum Corps, Sunjets Steel Band, Camping, Summer Academy, Winter Camping, Boys Choir, P+S Frat and Sorority etc. JPEG files are the best and can be sent to: zajsfamily@optonline.net or burgie@mamkschools.org I am currently a professional musician and school teacher at a middle school in Westchester county. The documentary is Just getting off the ground, but thank you all in advance for your help- Kim E. Burgie |

| Message: | It is just nostalagic to view all of the responses. I can hear the voice of many of you. I can still visualize your faces. I am and will always be A WARRIOR til I die. I was a member of the Jerome Cadets Corp as soon as that building went up. It was a place that my parent's found refuge for me. Christ saved my soul but the Cadet's saved my BUTT!! It hurts to see the great Indian Head gone. I remember munch time cheeseburgers and the Pancake breakfast from McDonald when on tour. I remember Sparkle Drill team rehearsal(Boy I miss Charlene and Denise),Launa's dance class, the Sunjet Steel Band rehearsals with the Late Howard J Bank. Summer Academy with the late Ms.Drew and Ms. LLoyd.Pledging P&S 14th line while being A Warrior on tour.( Dawn And Karen Rosario really helped me with that one.) We started with 14 and ended with 2. Jan Moore (Ion's sister -the moon) and I (The Odd Couple)Til this day I still see individuals from the Corp and Pen & Scroll. Many of us are either in the Service or Work for NYPD or Corrections. It figures a military structure. Hey it was great reminicing. I kid you not I heard a whistle a couple of years ago while crossing 12th ave and 38th. street and turned and guess who it was MR. Lathen my dad away from my dad. The Lathen Family. (say it to the beat of the ADDams Family. Gotta love them. How is Caira doing? (smile). Thanks and keep in touch if there are anymore reunions. |

| Message: | The last time I attended Minisink was on a visitors day in about 1974. Saw several persons I knew, working on staff etc. I have been in New England since 1968. the most invovement I've seen was working as Treasurer of the Portsmough NAACP back around 1990. The last Minisinker I saw was Bro Tom Bongolan (councelor 58-59) whose place I took. Took part in Sister Kay's wdding but sure wish I had her address in Bermuda. I am retired and living in Maine (nice in Summer, but o boy). Last chuch I served was in East Providence RI. Not a bad place at all. If you remember me leave a note, I'd sure appreciate hearing from anyone from Minisink. It was life changing for me. Last time I was at the Camp was about 5 years ago.My son had broken both his wrists in a motrocycle accident and he was staying in Middletown. I drove up to the camp like I had been there the week before. What happend to Minisink? Can someone tell me, and is the Minisink spirit still alive and kicking? It better be because many really became adults thanks to Minisink. |

Honor graduate of Bronx High School of Science and Bryn Mawr College, Carolyn was the cover star of an Ebony Magazine issue in the late 1950s which chronicled the lives and times of Black students at Dartmouth College [Hanover, NH] during Winter Carnival Weekend. Carolyn eventually joined the staff of her undergraduate alma mater and became the Associate Dean for Financial Assistance. She was a brilliant person with a radiant smile and a humorously-crafted world view. She was still at Science when I went off to Dartmouth in '54, fresh from a Summer of dates and teenage handholding. Her frequent letters [on pink papaer] were important missives getting me through lonesome stretches away from Harlem and NYC. And I still marvel at her language facility: she wound up teaching me some German ["Wenn hesser Damen gemacht verdon, ..."], amongst a host of other things. I have never known anyone who was more intellectually gifted or clever. Yes, Carolyn, as you would often say: "It would appear thusly". | Message: | In 2003, our daughter Tamar Renee Bolt was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. She was 29 years old. Tamar's first reaction was shock and disbelief. once the shock wore off she decided to turn her condition into something that would change her life and the lives of other's for the better. The Tamar Renee Bolt Memorial Fund Inc. was established to honor our daughter, We are a non-profit organization, we promote awareness and host donor education and recruitment drives in hopes of making it easier for people of color to register as potential bone marrow & blood stem cell donors. Although Tamar passed away before she received her stem-cell transplant, she understood the importance of educating people of color about the bone marrow and blood stem cell donation process, and how we all can make a difference by joining the National Marrow Donor Program. We survive on donations, and by making our Minisink family aware of our fund, you can have an important part in saving someone's life. If you are interested in helping raise funds, or to learn more about our efforts please visit us at: www.tamarbolt.org you can also make donations online at www.active.com/donate/TamarBolt All online donations are quick and secure. You will receive a confirmation by email of your donation, and all contributions are tax deductible. |

| Subject: | Harlem Girl Finds Summertime Home |
| Message: | Hi Everyone, I found this on a lark! I lived at 174 W. 137th St. and spent alot of time at Minisink Day Camp. My brother Tyrone and sister Cynthia also attended. It was during the summer months when we weren't at summer camp. My Harlem childhood is very precious to me. We lost Cynthia a week after 9/11 and I lost another brother, William and Mommy and Daddy right after. So I hold my memories of Harlem in high regard. I live in San Diego, CA now and I'm an actress p/t, maybe you've seen me on Law & Order, Marci X or the upcoming movie Poster Boy. If you remember any of us "Mahee's" give me a holla. I would love to correspond with you. In doing some research I found out that "The Cotton Club" was very close to Minisink, I wonder if Minisink is standing on the same ground. How great is that. Anyway, as kids we went to camp Norhtover, Vacamus and Camp Iriquois. For all of the Mahee's it really is great being in contact with my Harlem brothers and sisters. Oh and by the way, whoever man's this site, please remove the previous message from the young lady below. It is inappropriate and does not belong. |

| Message: | Although we had a very successful and rewarding NY2MD picnic last weekend, we need to keep this experience alive. Too many of our youth are seeking reputations and love in all the wrong places. Minisink molded many of us and gave us the fortitude to be what we are today. We have to keep that experience alive for those that are following or seeking a path to follow. It is not the time to sit back and reflect on our experiences without making that experience a living experience for those who have no idea what being a Minisink family member was all about. Keep the dream alive...if we don't do it, who will? |

| Message: | Hi everyone. With great sadness, I want to let you all know that the mother of Paula, Barbara, Pat, Paul and Lillian Balfour has passed away with certainly memories of her closest of friends and extended family that Minisink provided. She and her brother literally helped build Minisink and devoted the energies, lived and believed in all that it had to offer. I was 4 year old Minisink brat and continued and grew through every program summer and winter, cadets, Warrior, Tap 62 following two sisters. As Minisink's Arts and Crafts Director has left behind a load of free hand water colors etc. I'll try to make them available to view on some site or another. Say a pray to Paula. |

| Subject: | "Warriors"/P&S Re-Union-2004-CANCELLED!!! |
| Message: | Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are forced to cancel the affair scheduled for this evening (October8, 2004) at the Minisink Townhouse. We learned this past evening that there was a flood in the building which caused the gym floor to buckle making it unusable. We attempted to secure an alternate site on an emergency basis but was not successful. We will therefore reschedule the affair for next year after repairs are completed and hopefully hold it on a Saturday. Those individuals who purchased tickets can request a refund, or hold onto them for the re-scheduled date at which time it will be honored. We are very sorry for the inconvience. |

| Subject: | Looking for Two of My Former Counselors, Sharmin & Denise (ADAHI 1964 &1965) |
| Message: | Hello My Family, I'm sure I speak for soooo many of us former Minisinkers.....to have located this website was a true blessing. I know for me, Minsink was one of the most positive experiences I could have had as a young child in Skyview to a hormonal teen in Adahi. Now to my main reason for this message. I would like to get in contact with my last two (2) counselors I had in ADAHI. Their names are Sharmin & Denise. Because of them teaching me how to be a young lady first & then a stronge black woman, I would not know where I would be today. To some this may sound corny but to me I can only speak what my heart feels.....& that is a LIFE LONG LOVE for all of the staff (from the maintance crew, to the kitchen crew & especially to our counselors). For taught us how to have good clean fun without drugs o violence. One thing I must say is that Camp Minisink taught us all MORALS & MANNER because without those two things, you as a person are lost in this world, & these two things are what our young black youths are no longer being taught. We have been truly blessed. Well, let me get off of my soap box & sign off but one last question....Has anyone seen or stayed in contact with "TONTO" from maintance staff at camp? If so I would like to be able to drop him a line or visa versa. ROCK ISLAND LINE IS A MIGHTY ROAD...ROCK ISLAND LINE IS THE ROAD TO RIDE...ROCK ISLAND LINE IS A MIGHTY GOOD ROAD...SO IF YOU WANT TO RIDE IT...GOTTA RIDE IT LIKE YOU FIND IT....GET YOUR TICKET AT THE STATION....FOR THE MINISINK LINE!!!!!! LOVE & PEACE TO ALL.... |

| Message: | When I found this site I was just overwhelmed..I went to Camp Minisink from the time I was 7 years old to my teens 1957-1965. So many memories rushed back. My grandmother Bleeker Johnson ran the "Lodge" for so many years. I used to stay at the Lodge until I was old enough to stay in the units. Lakeview to Shawnee and every unit in between. Pow Wow's, the Canteen, Root Beer Lake..I am crying as all this rushes back thru my memory. I can remember many a show at the rec hall by the boat house. Paul Balfour and I completed all our requirements to pledge the Feather but for some reason it never happened. We built a chapel right next to Lakeview...I remeber making the cross out of birch and putting the benches together...survival course where they left us in the woods blind folded the night before and we had to get back based on our instincts..Burgee, Bill, Thornie...its like a a whirlwind of memories just over taking me. I was in the Minisink Cadets for 6 years and how many reviews at the 369th Armory in Harlem...The original "Town House" on Convent Avenue where the buses used to gather to take us to Camp Minisink..back then the trip seemed to take forever...the stops at the RED Apple..(its still there!) I remember starting to Pledge for the Featherman in NYC at 155th street, the fellowship and the singing and the night I found out that I had to move to NJ...(I was devestated)..I had talent as a football player and I had to make a decision. A decision that has brought a wonderful life. My the deep ties with the City Mission Society and Camp Minisink ARE MY DNA..and the friends and fellowship that I had has deeply affected every corner of my life. I am CAMP MINISINK HEART AND SOUL. | Message: | You know MINISINK is a good thing when you think about it and all of these memories FLOOD your mind. Even reading some of the posts on this page took me into another space and time. I love all of you and thanks for being a part of such a wonderful legacy. MINISINK is MAGIC! I can't even think about the bad times and not smile. Honestly, aside from getting caught on the boys side of camp by Ray Jay and waking up extra early for PT how bad could it really get? What I would give to see Herman's smiling face and hear his bright "Good Mornin'" or to see Willie quietly holdin' it down in the kitchen with them loud 'yungins' in Flamingo. Every experience is noted and I'm so glad my grandmother listened to Mrs. Essie Stewart (a neighbor whose children were already attending MINISINK)in 1978 and sent me, my duffle bag, and my plastic basin a-packin'! As of now I'm looking for the perfect frame for my FIRST MINISINK t-shirt. Yes! It's that special. Well, holla at me if you can. God is good all the time and he showers MINISINK with blessings. We're the seeds from those blessings so...carry on y'all! HOW HOW! |

| Message: | Hello fellow Minisink'ers. I never knew this site existed. I spent the summers from 1978-1983 at Minisink. Unfortunately, that was so long ago I don't remember fellow campers. I was in two units in my time there...Skyview and Adahi. The only people I remember were two councelors I had while I was in Adahi. One was named June, the other was Tina. It's funny as I sit here and type this more memories of my time at Minisink come to mind. I remember one year, I had to be about 11. June was my councelor. There was a girl in our unit that collected catipillars. She kept them in the unit house. Someone, being cruel, poured ammonia over them and killed them. The whole unit was called to the unit house in the middle of the night until someone confessed. We were made to exercise when we should have been sleep. June looked out though. She allowed three of us to go back to the cabin. June took the three of us under her wing. I remember being allowed to go to the lake with her when the councelors were down there hanging out one night. She was cool. I remember Tina because she was really short. One year our unit was overcrowded so 4 of us had to stay in a tent. We used to joke that Tina was our councelor because she was the only one who could stand straight up in the tent...lol. I miss my days at Minisink. I remember a lot of other things, much to numerous to mention now. If there is anyone out there who was in Adahi (I don't remember much from my Skyview days)around 1982-1983, send me an email. I would love to exchange stories. |

| Subject: | Looking to see my old friends from Minisink |
| Message: | Well, I must say running into an old friend from my minisink days. Brought back many memories, I started at Minisink in 1983 as a junior counselor and eventually climbed the chain of command to Unit director. Even lifeguarded two summers in a row, I must say I have met the most interesting people who have affected my life. From Kelly waters, Quinton hunt, Earl "ceasaer" Jarret, and yes Raymond Johnson. Even though the line of communication is long since been severed. I still look back at old pictures and tell the stories of my fun at minisink for over ten years...I miss the summers of getting away, the lake sings, the tap outs. Even though I have never became a feather I have always supported the organization. If there is one wish I would love to see all my old minisink buddies from 83-93. I currently live in Orlando, Florida, and I run my own management company. A big shout out to my Girl Nadja who I have been running into from NY to LA ( we had fun at the Vibe awards). God bless you all, and may he keep blessing you. IF you need to reach me contact me via email...Thank you, and keep minisink going strong. Love always "D.C." |

| Message: | Minisink was and still is a blessing in my life. My Brothers, Leslie & LeRoy Worrell, and I were fortunate enough to attend camp for about 6-7 years. During those years we made some wonderful friends, some of whom we are still in contact with with today...William Allen, Jerard Washington, Roz, Lisa, etc. I also see Debra, Head Counselor of Adahi, from time to time. My main reason for this message is to reach out to as many Minisinkers in the New York area as possible. My twin cousins Dana & Kyle, now 25 years old, were on the Cosby Show 20+ years ago. Dana is fighting for her life with Cancer (Lymphoma). I'm trying to get a local (NYC)address for Bill Cosby. If anyone knows how to get in touch with him please email me at sworrell@acninc.net or sworrell@gc.cuny.edu. I was a member of the Cadet Corps for many years at St.Andrews under the Command of Gen.Bill Clark.I became a Featherman in 1963,worked in the kitchen as a "Flamingo boy" in '64&'65 and was a counsler in "Mountain View" in '66 before I went into the Navy.People who were in Camp that summer probably remember me as the guy who had a misunderstanding with my friend and feather brother Finley over the affections of a certain young lady. How I miss those wonderful days that I spent at Camp. Hope to hear from some fellow Minisinkers soon. Some of you will remember my brother "Nene" who passed on several years ago. |

| Message: | I am sitting here brimming with emotions and memories. Minisink was such an integral part of my childhood. Like all of you, I feel so very blessed having had those experiences. I was rasied on a 143rd between Lenox and 7th avenues and attended camp, either '63 - '66 or '64 - '67 in units mountain view, pine view and, (was that greenwood or lakeview), didn't make it to Shawnee. The last summer I attended camp my nickname was 'racoon', cause there was another fat boy in the unit and he had already been dubbed 'Gentle Ben'. That was the summer we did a eulogy for a cockroach as part of our talent show, and a dance number choreographed by 'Mad Orange' to the Temptations, 'Runaway Child' Anybody remember that summer, or the Finnley brothers (hope I spelled their names right) Yo Mousey, Joseph Meekans, Warren, holla at a brotha if you're listenin. An' a Featherman by the name of Vincent who was on the NYPD last I saw him. I was also a cadet, (we was drilling long before step) and a student under Sensei LaPuppet... man, what memories I've been a resident of Florida, now over 20 years but I can't count the times I've talked about Camp Minisink. It's good to have found some folk who know what I'm talking about. In all the messages, I've read here today, I felt and heard the same wistful reminiscence. I'm sure we didn't know then, how influencing those summers and after-school experiences were to be. Please include me on every mailing list and rest assured I will stay in touch. I have never found a organization such as this in all my travels. Nor have I found friends that could have taken the place of Minisink friends, I am a Tap 57 attended camp from 1946-1959. My mother was the craft counselor along with Ms. Anderson. I live in Alvin, Texas and would live to hear from Minisinkers. | Message: | I used to got to the center when I was a kid and in my teens. It's great to see the Cadet Corp means as much to so many as it does to me. I remember the winter weekends, fencing, Drill team competitions, pizza at Munch Time and Friday night parties at the center. My first job, was a summer camp counsler. Weight training with Comander Lathan, I'm glad I had the Cadet Corp to go to it kept me out of trouble and gave me a sense of purpose. I pledged the first 25th line of Pen & Scroll, the only line not to go over. I used to feel cheated, cause I put my heart into it. But when I look at the experince as a whole, I walked a way with a best friend / brother for life, Mack Rose who was on line with me. (He's over in the Middle East in the Service. If anyone is interested in writing him I have his contact info.) I spoke to Nathan "Roger" Campbell recently and he advised me that, Brothers from P&S have been meeting and there is talk of rejuvinating. I just might be interested in the Grad Chapter. I still have my Book. If anyone is in contact with Erin Sanchez please foward her my info shield242@aol.com / 914-661-7420. Stay Well, Marcus |

| Message: | Dear Cynthia: I have no idea what your name might be now, since ladies have multiple aliases. When I knew you , your last name was Bell. I still remember how grand you looked as you led our Warriors. It is a shame that we were unable to carry on the programs for our younger members that saw us through all the pitfalls that our young children suffer under today. I am footlite44@aol.com,@646-242-4953. I wish you and your family all the best in the new year. All praise to Minisink, Tapawingo, and the Order Of The Feather. I went on to Kappa Alpha Psi, and all praise to our organizations which keep our community together.Happy New Year. Footlite |

| Message: | Sitting here with my child, I can't help but react well to this site. I yell with excitment wishing that I had someone who could be as excited with me. I am SFC. Maurice Myers (honorary Lt.)of New York City Mission Society Cadet corp. Those years(1974-1978) at North Press were some of the best years of my life. I remember camping, the summer program and sgt. training school. I am now a teacher and use so much of the information that I learned at North Press in my classroom with my students. Is there anyone out there that can give a brother information on what happened to North Press? I can't find anything on the corp itself. What happened to Bogle, Burgie, Smith, Col.Meachun, Maj. James, And the famous Sgt/maj Darrell Cavett? This is very important to me. History is my life and this is an important part of that life. Any brothers or sisters out there that might know me or my brother Eric are encouraged to write. I can't wait to here from you. I wish you all peace and grace. |

| Message: | The Minisink Cadets were my Boyscouts. I remember when I was 7 I had a choice to be either a boyscout or a cadet. As far as I was concerned there was no way I wasn't going to be a cadet. They were the coolest thing for a black boy to be in NY. This was back in the 50's. The boyscouts were cute but the cadets were like men. They drilled. Every kid wanted to be one. And when they started drilling with rifles that sealed the deal. |

| Message: | In 1964 I was the little guy with the glasses from cabin #5 of the Lake View unit, who was allowed to play the bugle in front of the dining hall at camp.As that was the year of the split, I only spent one more summer at camp, as I went on to become a Warrior. For years I stood on the steps in front of P.S. 28 at the Cadet Summer Academy with horn in hand at every formation. In 1972 I pledged on the 12th line of Pen & Scroll. Leadership Training Schools, Steel Band, if it was offered, I took advantage of the opportunity. As I look back on the years I can not help but to reflect upon my City Mission experience. Like all of you who have shared these same emotions and experiences. I stumbeled upon this web-site by accident, but I am elated to have found it. A seed was planted within each of us many years ago. In some it has unfortunatly withered and died, but in the majority of us it has grown to a point, were we are positive influences in our respective communities. Tonight,I will say a special prayer of Thanks to Thornie, Will Burgie and all of the others in the City Mission family. |

| Subject: | Tap Sisters/Feather Brothers from the Summer of Love 1969 |
| Message: | I'm delighted to find this site and to see one or two postings from my sisters and brothers from 1969. Those were golden days...and it is hard to picture the faces which are now too radiant to recall... 1969 was the year. News about a big party that had caused the closing of the New York State Thruway reached camp at one point, and we knew instantly that no one would be sent home on the Shortline that weekend for bad behavior. And so WE partied. They later called that gig Woodstock. We watched men walk on the moon from our little perch in the auditorium in the mountains (I confess that I left the auditorium that night to stare at the moon to see if I could see anything). Sisters and brothers were sporting proud and regal new hairdos known as afros. One fine evening LaVerne Williams rendered a splendid serenade to the hills and to us gathered on the shore from a boat in the middle of the lake...the sweetest echoes rebounded above the lit torches in that natural amphitheatre. Sharmin told us we when we were cool and when we weren't: "Splivvy." The magnificent Dianne mesmorized us all, to the delight of Chuck Davis, with her graceful dancing. I got my bangle bracelets caught up in Irving Knight's alpaca sweater and tore a big hole in it while cringing during the showing of "Wait Until Dark". And we partied like hell to the tunes of Sly and the Family Stone, the Delphonics and Isaac Hayes ("By the time I get to Phoenix, she'll be rising...") We lifted every voice and sang, partied for a while after and then went our separate ways. I'm splitting time between DC and NJ these days, and would love to hear from folks in my year in either of those two locales, and from anywhere you may be. I'm working as an attorney for the Environmental Law Institute in DC, but still currently maintain my residence in Englewood, NJ. Take good care, all Vivian |

| Message: | Hi, A very interesting and surprising meeting happened to me over the 4th of July weekend. I was visiting my Mother and Sister in Richmond, VA. I have been living in Tallahassee, FL. Since I came here for college (FAMU). Needless to say, I haven’t been back to NYC much since both my mother and sister moved to VA. In addition, I don’t think I have been back to Minisink since I pinned my cousin in his Tap ceremony. I only know how to contact 1 of my Tap (15 total) so needless to say I haven’t seen any of my Tap in several years. I was in VA to visit my family, everyone came down from NYC, and see my sisters new house. She had a big house warming party and all of her friends from NYC came down. As it turns out, one of my sister’s good friend is a good friend with my Tap sister. I found this out as I was relaxing at the party and looked over at someone staring at me. It was my Tap, Courtney Simmons. It’s very funny how this is such a small world. I love to know how to contact some of my other tap. Kyle DJ’s for a radio station in NYC 96.?? Moose |

I am grateful for my camping experiences. I camped at both the original site at Port Jervis and at Dover Plains. I was a Skyview, Adahi and a Talahi girl. I was in LTC '82 and a Tap in '83. I never got to be a counselor because I moved away in August of 1983. I thank God for this camp. I learned so much about the importance of God and family. I looked forward to seeing the same people each summer and at the Townhouse during the winter. If there is anyone who remembers Tammy (a.k.a "forehead")from Tap "83, PLEASE holla at me at my e-mail address. | Message: | I'm thrilled that I finally found a site about Minisink. How long has this thing been up anyway? I used to be a lil camper there back in the day. I'd say from 76-79 or so. Give or take a year, but I do know it was in the 70's. I'm also going to contact my Aunt Jackie. She was a nurse at the infirmary and I'm sure she'd be down about a reunion. Time to call her up and see if we can arrange something. WOOHOO!!!! I had so much fun during those years. If you write me and I don't recognize you don't be offended. It's been 25 some odd years for christ sake. |

| Subject: | " Harlem Roots " |
| Message: | It has been many, many moons but the memories still linger. Just sitting here playing on the computer, checking out sites and I typed in "Minisink." Up you popped, back to my history, back to my roots. I live in Los Angeles now, but Harlem is my home, along with all that is Harlem. The essence of Harlem will never change. Minisink pulled me from 112th Street to establish a worth as a "cadet" that has never left. "The Warriors Drum and Bugle Corps" allowed me to express myself through music and uniformity. I loved those days, the cadet companies gathering at the armory on Lenox Ave. for the annual drill exhibitions. Back in the sixties, to be a part of Minisink meant you were a part of something. Thanks for the memories. |

| Subject: | A New Day |
| Message: | It's been a while since that tragic morning of September 11,2001, I'll never forget watching channel seven on the television, just after the first plane hit...then the second plane whch we did not see from the camara angle. The stations went blank as their Antenna's were on the top of the "World Trade Center". I finaly fouad that Channel two was still broadcating via the "Empire State Building". I watched in shock, as I am sure others did, as one tower fell...then the other...then Building #7. I was Fortunate NOT to be in the area, for I know I would have tried to help, as others did, and would have not survived either...as many did. I did not know, personally, ANY of the vitims, I was spared this feeling, but it really does not help, for I still feel for those that did know someone that perished there. My friends at the Marina sawpersons falling, one of the boat owners worked on the 104th Floor for Cantor Fitzgerald, a third cousin was a cook at "Windows on the World", there were MANY stories like this, too many stories. But, there is a "NEW DAY" dawning...we WILL go on...We WILL survive this...WE WILL OVERCOME! I suppose that it is times like these that one is grateful of the past, and thankful that if not for the family, and friends, one would be alone trying to get thorough these times. It brings to my mind a verse from a song: "seems like only yesterday, I was cheerful bright and gay. Looking forward to what I wanted to do, the role I was about to play. But as if to knock me down, reality came around. and without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces. Leaving me to doubt all about God and His mercy for if He truly does exist, why did He desert me in my hour of need, I truly am indeed...alone again...naturally". Today is a New Day...Minisink Forever!! |

| Message: | I have a view of all of Manhattan Island from my office window. But I was in the school hallway when a student reported to me that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center. Images I had seen in old Life magazines sprung to mind. Light airplane hits Empire State Building. Probably some loss of life in the building & on the ground. Another New York story. Maybe some teachers can use it in class. Note it, use it, move on. Took a look out the window; yes, one tower is obviously burning near the top. Then, the report of a second plane. And the Pentagon. Then one tower disappears. Then the other. I've experienced this dream state before: in elementary school after the first Kennedy assassination... in junior high school during my paternal grandmother's funeral... reading about Yukio Mishima's spectacular public protest & ritual suicide in Life magazine... senior year in high school during a bloody confrontation at a Wall Street demonstration protesting the Kent State massacre... realizing that even if I lost consciousness from the head injury I sustained, Coach was not going to jump into the City College pool to save my black ass... being shot at on a dark Bronx back street... finally executing an Eskimo roll in a kayak... the sudden cognition that more than 80% of teachers at Thomas Jefferson High School could care less about educating their charges... that basketball game that included sophomore Sidney Green where the basket seemed to be a yard wide... the marriage ceremony at St. Hugh of Lincoln RC Church... the bicycle ride to Peekskill on the hottest day of the year... Ishara's birth... the closing... getting off at the wrong end of the train late one night & realizing the two men in front of me were probably going to try to rob me... the instant before the cars collided... This state is neither pleasure nor pain. It consists of moments of utter reality & clarity. I am capable of incredible focus and aplomb. I could deliver a baby; I could kill someone. I could live 100 years; I could die in the next hour. All the same to me. Where have you gone, Joseph Campbell? |

Our saying then was "Doing the Do, Tap 72". Where are my Tap Sisters like The Hellified Twins Libby & Lynne, Christina,Lee Anna, Wendy Debra,Shelley, Sandy,. Donna, Althea, Cissy, Cherly and my girl Renee F. And Leslie I got a picture with you and Rawn. Do you remeber? If I had a scanner all of my Tap Sisters would be everywhere. My big sister was Toni. She had a big red Afro from Tap '71'. I hope everyone is having much fun at the Reunion. Sorry I couldn't make it because I just became a Grandmother to a beautiful girl. But I remember those days well at Camp Minisink. |

| Subject: | Minisink on my Mind |
| Message: | A Shout out to all my Minisnk Alumnus.Without this wonderful thing called the 'Internet'we could not share our many memories of Camp Minisink. My first experience of Camp Minisink began the summer of 1972(Greenwood). LeRoy and Shelley my brother and sister were in Pineview and Skyview respectively. That summer we attended two camps. Camp MOBELEE, Charlotville, NY, which was also a Black camp. After 3 weeks in Camp MOBELEE, our mother shipped us off for another 3 weeks in Camp Minisink. we never looked back after the Minisink experience. I have so many memories of Greenwood, Shawnee, Flamingo and the Feather. The mornings in Greenwood when Ernie(Head Counselor)Every morning 6am Military drills -dress right dress.I can remember trying to sneak over to Adahi and ending up in Talahi. Michael Bolt caught us. By the way Mike what were you doing in P----r's cabin? We were Dayriding not Nightriding. I can remember the counselor's cabin on fire 3am and the Port Jervis firemen. I can remember Gator on the garbage truck. I can remember Finley on the Finley mobile.I can remember rolling and tumbling down Skyview Hill. I remember the trail behind Pineview leading up to Crystal Lake. I can especially remember crossing the burning sands in the year of our Lord 1976. So many memories we all had. I'm just thankful and blessed to be alive today so I can reminisce my Minisink experiences with my Minisink family. See you all soon. Love Les Worrell |

| Subject: | Best of Both Worlds |
| Message: | Thank you for bringing me back home. I found this site by accident or fate. It doesn't matter, for a brief click or two, I was home(both homes.) You see, I was (and in essence, will always be) a member of NYCMS Cadet Corps/CMCC Warriors. As a cadet, I started at age 6(1975) where our meetings were at North Presbyterian on 155th Street and ended up at Minisink on Lenox. Even though, after the split, our headquarters was on Jerome Avenue and 170th Street, my branch was at Minisink under the command Mr. Gary Bogle and Reginald Smith. I had the honor and privilege to experience both worlds; and they taught me well. I never pledged The Order of The Feather or The Pen & Scroll Military Fraternity, but their legacies encouraged me to join Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (Fifth largest Black fraternity)and King David Lodge #18-Free & Accepted Masonry-PHA. When I joined the Warriors Drum & Bugle Corps, this young Harlem boy was able to see past his "four corners" and I thank you for that. Even though I was a CMCC Warrior and not a Minisink Warrior: A Warrior Is A Warrior No Matter The Tribe. To all those who helped/taught me to be a man, I say THANK YOU FOR MY HISTORY. |

| Message: | Minisink has touched my life from the first moment that I've set foot through the doors of enlightenment, back in '68 as a young child.Mainly as an after school activity, something that more children and their parents should encounter. The most impact in my life is and was Mrs.C.Wickham, Mrs.E.Grey, Mr.J.Best and Mr.J.Hopkins and other staff and volunteer members that I can't remember their names, but are always in my heart.I'm please to know that there are so many Minisinkers keeping in touch with their roots.Camp Minisink and Town House will always be embedded in my heart and mind for it was and still is one of the best part of my childhood life.Being a member of Minisink,BSA Troop 145,Order of the Arrow,Explorer, attened Hurricane Island Outward Bound School and John Best's teenage discussion group really prepared me for life (besides my mother of course,Pastor Lilieth Locklear: deceased). All thanks to Minisink for contributing to the African American Communities of Harlem.1980 was the year of my release from Minisink to the outer world. They took in a boy and released a well, groomed educated young man...motto.."EACH ONE,TEACH ONE" |

| Subject: | Any filmmakers out there? |
| Message: | The other night I was watching Tavis Smiley's show. His guests were actors Holly Robinson-Peete and Glynn Turman. They both sponsor charities. Turman sponosors a summer camp for underprivileged kids. When Tavis asked them what motivated them to do what they do, Mr. Turman began talking about Minisink and Thornie, and the impact the days spent at camp had on his life. It really brought back home to me how far-reaching and important the Minisink experience was, is and continues to be. I am not a filmmaker, but someone with the ability should do a documentary about this vital piece of our history. If there are more folks like Mr. Turman, and I am sure there are, perhaps this is not a toatlly outlandish possibility. If nothing else, I will be ever grateful for the generations of minisinkers in my family, the leadership training classes that helped shape me, and the lifelong friendships I continue to enjoy. Peace! Sabrina Johnson Chandler, Tap'78 |

| Message: | Hi all, I spoke to Eleanor Marion-Guy and her brother Ben Marion this afternoon. I asked Eleanor about Ben, and Ben about Eleanor, each stated that the other was "holding up OK"! Both Eleanor & Ben are VERY grateful for the support given by you all...their friends and "Minisink" family. I told both of them that "funerals are for the living. And for everyone that expresses their sorrow, both physically or spiritually, it means they have taken some of the grief from you, and have taken it unto themselves...you are not alone". They asked me to tell you ALL "thanks for everything"! I thank all of you also...but this is what life is supposed to be about and that's what friends are for! Minisink forever! later, Mel |

| Message: | David, thank you, thank you, for creating this website. It cannot be said enough times what an enormous gift you have given to Camp Minisink alums everywhere who find this special place. Along with family, church and school, Camp Minisink is such an integral part of who I am, my character, my appreciation of my people, me as a team player, me as a team leader, me as a responsible adult. Anyone who knows me well, knows about Camp Minisink and knows of my dearest friends (who I met at camp). When I think about spirituality, I think about vesper services in chapel overlooking the lake and Sunday morning sing....when I think about my youth and the best times I've had, I think about morning sing, hikes, skyview hill, lake sing, Christmas in August, show of shows, camp fires, sleep outs, Indian pow-wows, making Tap, and many friends I've made over the years.... People are amazed when I tell them in what year an old song came out...I've catalogued the years of my youth around my summers at Camp Minisink.... I always thought it would be there. I never imagined as a child that Camp Minisink in Port Jervis would some day be just a memory. Well, we know in life that the one thing that we can count on is change....But, it's good to remember and hear from/about so many people whose lives Camp Minisink has touched and continues to touch. My last year at Camp Minisink was in 1979. That was the first year at the Dover Plains facility. It was very hard. There were so many hard and hurt feelings. I remember going over to Port Jervis with Luby Mays to search around for odds and ends; it was hard, like walking through a loved one's home after they've passed on. All summer the "old" Minisinkers (campers and counselors) talked about the Port Jervis. But, at the end of each session that year, during each candlelight service when campers stood up to reflect on their 2 or 3 weeks at camp, they talked about the friends they made, the fun they had (some had never been to Port Jervis, others had). It was clear then that Camp Minisink was not merely a place, it had become a spirit that continued to live among us. Amen |

| Message: | Tony Francis just gave me the site. It looks wonderful! I was at Minisink (I think) in 1962 and 1963. I was a Featherman and a member of "the Kitchen!"...one of those "wingos" I think....At any rate, I would love to be in touch with any Minisinkers out here in the midwest (I'm in Pacer/Colts country - Indiana!) |

| Subject: | Port Jervis 2000 Reunion |
| Message: | There were Minisinkers from the year 1939, the year of the "Port Jervis" Camp Minisink closing, to the "Camp Minisink" of today AND the future. Hazel came from England and Kay was there from Bermuda. There were Minisinkers there from as far west as California, to as far south as Florida and many points in between. They came from all parts of the United States to attend this "Third Annual Camp Minisink Alumni Reunion" at the Port Jervis site known today as "Team USA". Extra special thanks to Teddy and Sharmin, also Celia and EVERYONE else that "pitched in" to help make this one "heck" of a time. David Williams, as most of us know, has donated his time, efforts, and expertise in the running of this Homepage". Thanks David I would be remiss if I failed to mention the past and present "Feathermen" who participated in this reunion making it an "affair to remember". My personal THANKS to EVERYONE that attended, you really "MADE MY DAY"! Minisink Forever, Mel Jenkins "Flamingo" '56, "Warriors" Drum and Bugle Corps. '53 - '57 |

| Message: | I had a wonderful time at the "real" Camp Minisink on Visiting Sunday. I was especially moved by the new Feathermen and the connection between those men that came before and these youngsters. The moment when the first Featherman from the class of 1946 embraced his young brother is one I shall remember always. The Legacy lives on. Thank your Teddy and Sharmin. |

| Subject: | The Spirit Lives On... |
| Message: | I don't even know where to begin. I was always the last to do things; in camp, the last one to get a joke. Just bought a computer in April 2000; only found out about this website on August 18. August 18, 1972 was my Tapawingo Presentation so maybe it was supposed to happen this way. It's great to still feel the spirit so many years later. Michelle (Mindy) Harewood and I continue to spend hours on the phone reminiscing. My sister moved to Middletown 10 years ago and as I drive to her house to this day, looking across Interstate 84 West, seeing High Point in the distance, knowing Exit 2 Mountain Road is one exit away, I still get a lump in my throat. I live in the suburbs of South Jersey, in a highly wooded area. The seed was planted in 1969 for my love of the woods. This is all so invigorating. Teddy Mason (my first counselor in Adahi) and Sharmin Gray: thank you for Minisink Spirit, Inc. Love to all. |

| Message: | It was a glorious time. The weekend, Visiting Sunday. New visitors to the Port Jervis Minisink, returning campers/counselors; wives, sweethearts, children; traditional August weather; the hike to High Point instigated by Walter Roger Harris, now living in VA; wide-angel lens group picture by Mel Jenkins; The newest young men of the Order of the Feather and their Elder Brothers of the Bonnet from the 40's and 50's. Tap reunion and Alan Dillette. The Lake Sing was spectacular and painfully sorry, no pictures. Dark starry night and a clear/close to Earth Big Dipper. The oldest Elder, my MOM RoadRunner Rose Scott (age 87). Hazel & Eve from England, Kay from Bermuda; the Coveneys from Virginia Beach, Bobby & Betty Lou, remembering their bridal shower in the old chapel in 1953. I could go on and on and on. , THANK YOU SHARMIN AND TEDDIE for the opportunity to remember, reflect and rejuvenate. |

| Message: | Hi, everyone. I'm so sorry I missed Visiting Sunday this year. My lady friend became ill with a 103 degree temperature so we stayed in the whole weekend. I know there will be more, but each gathering is unique. I had my new digital camera ready, too! By the way, On Saturday, September 9, 2000, there will be a parade given by the Northeast Bronx Development Corp. followed by entertainment at Evander field. That's right - Evander Childs H. S. football field! I will be one of the vendors. I have added Sprint PCS service to my PC offerings. check out the web site. Love to the Family |

| Subject: | Your Reunion |
| Message: | Greetings, First I would like to say thank you to Jennifer, Mel, David and Lynne for your responses to my original query. The information you gave me was informative and helpful and I truly appreciate it. I also want to say thank you for the invitation to join you at Camp Minisink (Now Team USA) for a visit today. I have to admit that when we drive up to the check in point that I did not know what to say to the two ladies in charge of that. They were very pleasant and said we were more than welcome to go up and look around. That is exactly what we did. We walked around for about an hour and unfortunately nothing looked familiar but I did see a lot of similarities in the buildings and the layout as compared to Sharparoon. My husband and I were both very impressed with the size and the beauty of the facility. As we were leaving we noticed the license plates on cars...they were from Va., Md. Pa. NJ and New York. Seems to me that there was another one from even further away. To me that says a lot about the impact that Camp must have had on those people for them to travel such distances to get together. I am still seeking any information about or from Camp Sharparoon if anyone knows of any web sites to go to. I was also happy to hear that Lynn knew my father. Did any of you know Rev. Pat Zacarra or Dr. Dave Barry?? Anyway thanks so much for allowing us to share a part of the day with you today. I'll keep checking this site for names that I might know or any other info that might be helpful. God Bless you all.... Nancy |

| Subject: | Can I get directions? |
| Message: | I came across this site in search of Camp Sharparoon and New York City Mission Society. I need an address for NYC Mission if anyone knows it. My father was involed with City Mission and was the director of Sharparoon from 1957 to 1963 so I am aware of Camp Minisink. I visited there one time with my parents and remember being very impressed with the singing by the Tapawingo. I was at the camp one time. I thought it had been sold years ago and did not think that a Camp Minisink existed in this area any longer. If there is a Camp in the Port Jervis Area, can someone tell me how to find it?!?!? My husband and I live on Route 6 about 8 miles from Port Jervis. We went out looking for the old facility but had no luck finding it. Sorry I can't share any Minisink experiences but I do remember a woman named "Thornie" who lived in a house just a few miles from my home. What a lovely woman she was...is she still alive. By the way....My fathers name was Cal Gertsen...does anyone remember him??? He went home to be with the Lord in 1981. Thanks for taking the time to listen to my query. Nancy |
